Tijuana High School Football Players Recognized by National University Holiday Bowl

Two local high school students were honored as the 2014 offensive and defensive high school football players of the year in Tijuana at a press conference last month at the Puebla Amiga Hotel in Tijuana. Officials from the National University Holiday Bowl and sponsors of the award presented the offensive award to Alan Ruiz of Instituto Tijuana. The defensive award went to Alexis Martin del Campo from CETYS campus Mexicali.

The title sponsor of this 13th annual bowl awards program is Entravision. Other sponsors include the National City Mile of Cars, XHRST 107.7 FM, Radio Mexicana 1420.

For their accomplishments, each of their schools received $1,000 grants for their respective football programs.
This generous contribution was made possible by lead program sponsor, Entravision.

The award recipients will be recognized on a float in the bowl game’s Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by U.S. Bank on December 26th and on the field during the National University Holiday Bowl on December 27th. The 37th annual game kicks off at 5:00 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium and features teams from the Pac-12 and Big Ten. The game will be broadcast in Spanish on XEXX 1420 AM and XHRST 107.7 FM. Here is a look at the players who were honored today:

Alan Ruiz
Offensive player of the year
Senior, running back/wide receiver
Schoool: Instituto Mexico HS
Ruiz began playing football in the 8th grade at 13 years old, and was a key player in the championship from that season. He was selected captain in 2013 and 2014 by his peers. During the 2014 season, he scored 14 offensive touchdowns and one defensive score for a total of 15 scores during the season. He added 1,123 all-purpose yards between rushes, passes and as a special team returner. Ruiz has been selected twice (2013, 2014) to represent the state of Baja for the OEFA-CONADEIP Bowl.

Alexis Martin del Campo
Defensive player of the year
Senior, linebacker
School: CETYS campus Mexicali
Alexis Martin del Campo started his football career at age 12 at Zorros (Foxes) from CETYS campus Mexicali. He has twice been part of the team that has won the state championship and has been called to represent the State of Baja California to what is called the PET EXPRESS BOWL with the best players of the state from OEFA vs. the best players from CONADEIP. His team won both games. As a linebacker this year, he had 72 total tackles, 25 solo and 18 tackles for loss. He also forced 7 fumbles, recovered tow and had two interceptions.
