When the dust settled on Qualcomm Stadium’s rugby fields last Saturday morning, 16 dachshunds were wagging their tails as they had their tickets punched for the San Diego regional finals of the 2012 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. The San Diego finale for this Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl production is set for Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd on the track between horse races at Del Mar.
Scooter of San Diego was the fastest of more than 330 dogs that ran the 53-foot grass track, clocking a time of 2.72 seconds. Others in the top five include Presley of Placentia (2.78), Daphne of La Mesa (2.81), Maximus of Roseville (2.97) and Lady Love of Huntington Beach (3.0). Elvis of Placenita, Alvin of San Diego and Tootsie of Long Beach were the slowest to advance, each waddling across the finish line in 3.28 seconds. Nearly 75% of the dogs never crossed the finish line and of that group, 25% never left the starting gate.
The winner from the showdown at Del Mar will advance to the national championship, Thursday, December 27th before the start of the nationally televised Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by San Diego County Credit Union. Eight dogs from around the country will compete in the event finale.
This is the 16th year the non-profit bowl game has staged the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals.
“What a spectacle,” said Bruce Binkowski, Executive Director of the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. “For 16 years now the bowl game has been the center of the wiener dog racing universe…. Incredible!”
Race sponsors include Wienerschnitzel, Bridgepoint Education, the Port of San Diego, San Diego County Credit Union, San Diego Channel 6-The CW, Jack-FM, 760 KFMB, Navy Dispatch and San Diego CityBeat.
