Semi-finals for the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals take place November 8th at Del Mar Race Track
SAN DIEGO – The 19th running of San Diego’s speediest dachshunds took place Saturday, October 3rd at Qualcomm Stadium. Over 150 wiener dogs took to the grass race track and competed for a shot at advancing to the semi-finals. The top sixteen fastest dogs earned a chance to compete in the semi-finals of the event, to be held at the Del Mar Race Track on Sunday, November 8th.
The fastest dog on the scene was a familiar face. The reigning champion from last year’s qualifier posted the quickest time for another year. Hailing from Long Beach, dachshund Tootsie crossed the finish line in 1.57 seconds, beating her 2014 time by over a second! Rounding out the top three were newcomers Colby of Fallbrook, and Maddie, who came all the way from La Habra with her brother, Turbo Toby, who placed fourth.
In addition to the racing action, the Dapper Dachshund Costume Contest returned to the delight of spectators. The dogs strutted the catwalk competing in three categories: Football Furrenzy, Twieners (matching dog and owner costumes) and Most Creative.
The winner from the Del Mar semi-final will advance to the national championship set for Wednesday, December 30th prior to the start of the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade. Eight dogs will compete in the event finale that is televised to a national audience.
