Nearly 500 kids participate in annual Kaiser Permanente Youth Football Clinic

2015_clinic_285SAN DIEGO – The chance to “play where the Chargers play” drew nearly 500 kids to Qualcomm Stadium this past Saturday to participate in the annual Kaiser Permanente Youth Football Clinic.

The free clinic, a San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl production, was designed to promote and introduce college football to kids of all ages. Boys and girls ages 5-14 participated in offense, defense/agility and tackling/blocking drills run by local university coaches from San Diego State, USD, Grossmont, and Southwestern College.

Former NFL player Aaron Taylor entertained an attentive crowd of kids with his motivational message. Taylor, who played in the NFL for six years with the San Diego Chargers and Green Bay Packers, was an engaging speaker for the young kids as he talked about performing on the field and in the classroom. Jersey Mike’s provided a free lunch following the instructional portion of the morning.

In addition, the clinic served as an official regional qualifier for the NFL’s national Punt, Pass and Kick Contest. This competition allowed youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing and kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy. The top finishers from each age group (listed below) now advance to a sectional competition at a date and time to be determined.

This event was made possible by several bowl corporate partners including Kaiser Permanente, the San Diego Chargers, San Diego County Credit Union, The Mighty 1090, Cox Communications, San Diego Family Magazine, the Navy Dispatch and Jersey Mike’s.

The clinic serves as a fundraiser for the non-profit San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to generate tourism, exposure, economic benefit and civic pride for San Diego and its citizens by producing the nation’s most exciting college football bowl game and festival of events.

The 2015 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl kicks off Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 1:30 p.m. PT at Qualcomm Stadium.
