29th annual event raises funds for the nonprofit Holiday Bowl

SAN DIEGO – Mission Beach was all about hoops last weekend. For the 29th consecutive year, the Holiday Bowl produced a successful 3-on-3 basketball tournament, the Jack in the Box “Hoops at the Beach.”  Players and spectators enjoyed a weekend at San Diego’s largest outdoor basketball tournament. Over 120 teams played across 20 courts set up along Mission Bay’s Bonita Cove Park. Players of all ages and talent levels competed across 17 divisions, including elite, men and women, Pac-12 and Big Ten alumni, all the way down to third and fourth grade boys and girls. Team Flava took the championship in the Elite division on Center Court, earning dunkbragging rights and the title of San Diego County Champions.

The San Diego County Kia Dealers Slam Dunk Contest was Saturday at noon. A crowd gathered at center court to watch several players throw down some impressive dunks.  Malik Ibarra completed several high-flying dunks, but the high schooler sealed his victory and won over the judges when he jumped over not one, but two men for a jaw-dropping dunk. The judges posted tens across the board. San Diego Chargers Tyreek Burwell and Chris Hairston served as celebrity judges and were just as in awe of the dunk performances as the fans, snapping photos on their phones.

Contest courts ran all weekend long as well. Josh Hanson took the title in the adult division of the San Diego Chargers 3-Point Shootout, and James Pauley took home first prize in the MetroPCS Free Throw Challenge. Junior competitor Danilo Lazetic swept the competition, winning both the 3-Point and Free Throw contests.

There was a large military presence in the tournament, as Wells Fargo graciously underwrote the entry fees for 30 active-duty military teams.

This event serves as a fundraiser for the nonprofit San Diego Bowl Game Association, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to generate tourism, exposure, economic benefit and civic pride for San Diego and its citizens by producing the nation’s most exciting college football bowl games and festival of events.

Jack in the Box has served as title sponsor of “Hoops at the Beach” since its inception. Other event sponsors include the San Diego Chargers, San Diego County Kia Dealers, MetroPCS, Wells Fargo, Z90.3, Magic 92.5, NBC San Diego, San Diego City Beat, Navy Dispatch and San Diego Family Magazine.
