Bruce Binkowski Retiring from San Diego’s Bowl Games

Longtime deputy, Mark Neville, being promoted to executive director

SAN DIEGO – After 37 years of service, the last 14 as executive director, Bruce Binkowski is retiring from the San Diego Bowl Game Association (SDBGA). The SDBGA is the non-profit group that produces San Diego’s annual post-season college football bowl games – the Holiday and Poinsettia Bowls. He will remain on staff for a 38th year as executive consultant through February, 2016.

Binkowski, who was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the San Diego Hall of Champions Feb. 23, was the first paid employee of the SDBGA when the Holiday Bowl debuted in 1978. He succeeded John Reid as executive director of the Holiday Bowl in 2001. His many accomplishments include overseeing and directing the launch of the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl in 2005, an event that is credited for generating more than $85 million in economic benefit for the San Diego region since its inception. During his tenure the Holiday Bowl has contributed nearly $400 million to the local economy.

“Bruce’s leadership through the years has been exemplary and a key reason the bowl games enjoy the success they realize today,” said SDBGA President Vincent Mudd. “We are so appreciative of Bruce’s leadership for so many years and we are happy he will continue to serve us and assist with the transition to our new director. He will prove to be an invaluable asset to Mark as he steps in to fill his shoes.”

Effective March 1, 2015, the association’s longtime associate executive director, Mark Neville, will assume the executive director role. Neville started as an intern with the Holiday Bowl in 1991 and worked through the ranks to earn his way to the position. Through the years he has led the bowl’s sponsorship, marketing, advertising and media relations efforts. He has also been lead on nearly each of the bowl association’s year-around events, including the nationally televised bowl game parade.

“We are confident Mark is the right guy to lead the San Diego bowl game effort moving forward,” Mudd said. “His experience and knowledge of the industry is tremendous and he’s been by Bruce’s side learning the ropes for many years now. He is ready and we’re grateful for his passion and professionalism.”

The San Diego Bowl Game Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to generating tourism, exposure, economic benefit and civic pride for San Diego and its citizens by presenting the nation’s most exciting and entertaining bowl games and festivals of events. During its 37-year history, the organization has generated more than $730 million in economic impact for the region. San Diego’s bowl games – the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl and National University Holiday Bowl – are played annually each December.
